Ameland Vogelfototocht

End of winter photo tour? Will you join us on the search for returning migratory birds? Together with photographer Arjen Nouta and a local forest ranger, we'll visit a beautiful, photogenic location on Ameland to search for beautiful, perhaps even the first returning migratory birds, and to photograph some of the natural beauty and North Sea coast. You'll return home with a bag full of inspiration, tips to approach your bird photography differently, and perhaps some helpful tips on setting up your camera. You'll arrange the boat to Ameland yourself (9:45 a.m. Holwerd-Ameland). Perhaps you're already staying on the island, or you're making a weekend of it. Upon arrival on Ameland, we'll hop on our bikes (not included) to head to our photo location. If you're already on the island, the location will be sent to you. Ameland isn't very large, and a bike ride of about 45 minutes is planned. The forest ranger will take us to a beautiful location where we can take beautiful photos. I'll give you photography tips. I'll help you with focusing, shooting in various camera modes, lighting, and composition. After about three hours in nature, it's time to go your own way. You can, like me, head back to the boat, or you can grab a drink somewhere and do your own thing. For those in doubt, I'll be coming to the island from the mainland for a day myself, so I'm also dependent on the boat. After the boat docks, you arrange your transportation, and we'll depart from the tourist office to the location in question. I'm going to make this day suitable for beginners and more advanced photographers. But even experienced photographers will come home with beautiful photos. Perhaps this day will inspire you. - A camera with manual settings is a plus, but not a must. - A zoom lens makes photographing birds and wildlife much easier and more accessible. A 70-200° lens is a great start. - A tripod or monopod is useful. (I have one available to borrow if needed.) - In wintery conditions, it's wise to bring rain pants. - We'll cycle about 10 kilometers from the boat and then walk about 5 kilometers through the dunes and beach. The pace will be very slow, and we might see the first birds worth observing for the rest of the workshop after just 250 meters. - Nature reigns. I can offer you a beautiful moment in nature. Naturally, we'll look for a location where there's a good chance there will be birds, but no guarantees can be made. - We are guests in nature. Please respect nature and promote it. For example, please take your own litter back with you, and if you see anything that isn't yours, you can put it in your bag and put it in a trash can. - You'll arrange everything else yourself. Boat, bike rental, or transportation on the island are at your own expense. - You will receive confirmation of the workshop's progress no later than the Wednesday before the Wednesday before the workshop. Therefore, please wait to book the boat. If you cancel, you will be reimbursed for the workshop. Other expenses will not be reimbursed. - The workshop can also go ahead if the weather is slightly worse. Please be prepared for this. If the weather looks really bad, you will receive confirmation by Wednesday at the latest. We can arrange a Zoom call afterward and show and discuss some of the photos you took. Perhaps that would be fun and educational for you? This photo tour will be organized several times a year. Only a few details regarding the schedule will be different; please keep an eye on the websites.

Location

After the 9:45 AM ferry from Holwerd, you'll arrange your own bike or transportation, and we'll depart for the photo location. From there, it's a short walk to the entire area, making it easy to see everything. You're welcome to bring your own transportation, of course. I'll provide you with your contact information once we arrive on the island.

Important to know

In principle, the hike will always go ahead, even if the weather is a bit worse. If it turns out to be really bad, you can find information on this website about the next steps. Bring appropriate clothing for the season, as we'll be outside in the elements. A camera, of course; a tripod or monopod is very helpful, but not essential. However, after three hours, it's nice to be able to let your camera rest. Don't forget your food and drinks, and a bag for your trash. Please take these back to a designated trash bin.
